Yep, the answer to the bonus question on my first period Geometry quiz on Friday was been & dairy. Stemming from a life lesson in class the day before, my bonus question was “what two types of cattle are there?” Until Thursday, many of my students didn’t know there was a difference between beef cattle & dairy cattle – for some bizarre reason, the topic of cattle came up on Thursday in class and I used the opportunity to teach them something about where I came from. Totally unware that there was a difference, I explained the difference, and I told them to “write this down because it will be on a quiz one day” – sure enough, it was on the quiz on Friday and most of the students answered the question correctly. I might make farmers out of them yet…
I’m loving this job more each day. Yes, it is incredibly stressful and I lack the social life I had just a few months back, but I wouldn’t change the situation I’m in for anything. Most of my weekend has been spent talking about teaching, lesson planning, and grading papers, and although I get very frustrated at times, I know I’m here for a very important reason and I have to keep that in mind. Fractions and negative numbers may be the death of me again this week, but all of the stress is worth it when I see that one student who has been struggling so much finally understand what we’ve been working on. Also, the community I’m part of at Crockett HS is amazing – my coworkers are very supportive and the students love having their teachers there to support them at their activities. Just like last Monday, I’m sure I’ll be asked again if I’ll be at the football game again this Friday. Of course I will, I love HS football!
Although I’m here to teach my students, the lessons I’m learning along the way are amazing. Each day teaches me countless things, and the knowledge that my students share with me truly amazes me. These kids are special people – very smart & talented – and they deserve more than they’ve been given. I just hope to share with them as much knowledge as they have already shared with me. I’ve been in Michigan just over a month now & I’m falling in love with it – especially with the city of Detroit and the students served by the Detroit Public School System. Although I didn’t realize it back in April, I was placed in Detroit for a reason – I’ve been given this opportunity and I need to make the most of it. I’ve also been incredibly blessed, and now, it’s my time to pass those blessings on.
